The executive bureau of the Union for the Republic party has met today, Monday, 26th of November at the headquarters of the party after an invitation from the president of the party Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham. The meeting was held in response to the provocative and irresponsible statements of the secretary general of the Moroccan Al-Istiqlal party covered by various media; statements whose focus was that Mauritania was a Moroccan territory and that his party was the only one to maintain the basic nationalistic tenets of a national movement which believes that the real territories of Morocco expanded from Ceuta in the north to the Senegalese valley to the South.
During the meeting, the members of the executive bureau were informed about the declaration issued by the Executive Secretary in charge of Communication on the 25th of December, 2016 and they deeply appreciated its content. They were also informed about the declaration issued today by Al-Istiqlal party and looked at the statements of the party’s spokesperson that were covered by the media.
After deep and detailed discussions, the executive bureau of the Union for the Republic ended up with the following:
We record our thorough objection on, and condemnation of the statements pronounced by the secretary general of the Moroccan Al-Istiqlal party regardless of whatever contexts he was referring to. We consider it to be a serious stab to all Mauritanians in the most precious thing they own.
We have also looked at the declaration issued by the party and the statements of its spokesperson which we decided have not been clear enough as an apology that goes with the flagrant disrespectful announcements of the secretary general.
We, in the UPR have decided to stop all types of relations with this party and its parallel organizations until it clearly defines its stand on this issue and apologize to the Mauritanian people for the content of these offensive statements.
