Dakar, June 24 (Wang Meng of Xinhua News Agency), News from Nouakchott — When meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Mauritania Wu Dong, President of Mauritanian Ruling Party UPR Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham expressed support to China’s position on the issue of the South China Sea.

Ambassador Wu briefed Maham on the history and current state of the issue of the South China Sea and the position of the Chinese government, for which Maham expressed thanks and said that he knew the past history and reality of the issue.

Maham pointed out the Mauritanian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the issue of the South China Sea on May 6, which expressed support to the position of the Chinese government and called on China and the Philippines to find a way of solving the issue peacefully through direct bilateral negotiations. As the ruling party of Mauritania, the UPR supports the statement and believes that China’s proposition on the issue of the South China Sea is just and consistent with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
